This sounds a little extreme but children do need to learn to entertain themselves and they’ll only learn how to do this if we give them some time on their own. Modern parents tend to scaffold their children’s play so much, setting them up, setting them down, suggesting, leading, parachuting in. I am guilty of it and I know a lot of my friends are too. I’ve realised that my children hardly have any time to actually be on their own and they need time alone. They need to learn to play by themselves, learn how to problem solve, learn about what they like and what they don’t like, develop their independence and their own sense of self too. Life’s not one long entertainment show with somebody at your beck and call 24/7. At times it’s boring, sometimes we do find ourselves alone so we need to teach our children how to do things alone and let them know that doing things on your own is just fine and can be fun. If this means ignoring my two every now and again then so be it!! It’s an important life lesson to learn !
